Eraring Energy signs outsourcing agreement with Logica

29 September 2010

Logica, a leading IT and business services provider, today announced that Eraring Energy has renewed its outsourcing contract for IT services for a further three year period.

Logica will continue to provide end-to-end support for the energy generation company’s complete IT environment. This includes service desk, infrastructure, network, application, enterprise resource planning, and database services, all of which are underpinned by Logica’s ITIL aligned service delivery model. Logica has provided consulting and IT services to Eraring Energy since 2002.

“Logica’s experience in the Energy and Utilities market is evident, as demonstrated by their deep knowledge of our business and industry requirements,” said Mark Edwards, Manager Information Technology and Telecommunications, Eraring Energy. “The team has not only brought a complete understanding of our front and back office processes, but has integrated themselves into our own team to evaluate our specific needs for innovative technologies. Logica has proved to be a reliable partner in a time of significant change for the NSW energy sector.”

Logica has helped Eraring Energy improve business practices and reduce operation costs, whilst renewing its IT infrastructure to prepare the business for new challenges. For example, Logica has significantly enhanced a bespoke trading application to allow Eraring Energy to participate in the National Energy Market, a significant source of revenue. Industry regulation means participants in the scheme must have the capability to trade every five minutes, 24 hours a day. Logica has continued to provide the reliability and expertise to support Eraring Energy to ensure it meets all regulatory requirements.

Other significant projects include virtualisation of its IT infrastructure with VMware. This has improved data recovery and accelerated testing, as well as drastically reducing space and hardware requirements for the energy company. It is now in the process of implementing an Enterprise Backup Solution to reduce operational costs and retrieval time by switching from a disk to tape solution to a disk to disk solution.

Logica also helped Eraring Energy to upgrade its Ellipse ERP solution, implement and upgrade its document management solution, as well as consolidate its infrastructure, implemented security solutions, and provide ongoing 24x7 support from Logica’s national service desk in Hobart.

Colin Holgate, CEO Asia Pacific, Logica, was proud to announce the contract renewal. “Logica has the strength and experience in managed services that allows us to create value for our clients by understanding their needs intimately. We offer our clients deep industry expertise plus cost effective and low risk management of their IT infrastructure, providing them with advice and knowledge from both local and global sources.”

“Logica has been a long term partner of Eraring Energy. This decision to extend our working relationship is a testimony to the high quality of service which Logica’s team has provided over the last nine years and our in-depth knowledge of Australia’s energy sector,” said Holgate.

Logica has over 30 years’ experience providing IT and business support to Australia’s energy and utilities sector. Logica’s clients already include 11 of Australia’s 13 energy network companies, and seven of its eight gas companies.

“Australia’s energy sector is currently undergoing a period of change as it capitalises on new technologies to better manage energy production and distribution as a means to lower our impact on the environment. Logica understands the challenges and opportunities currently facing our energy clients and has the experience and specialist expertise to support them through these changes,” added Holgate.

Logica Australia supported the country’s first roll out of smart meters in Victoria, designing and implementing meter data management solutions, infrastructure and security protocols, as well new billing for smart meter solutions for the nation’s earliest adopters. Logica is now supporting many of the nation’s energy distribution companies in developing strategies for moving to a Smart Grid future.
