Yarra Trams switches on new improved SCADA
Logica’s MOSAIC SCADA system has gone live at Yarra Trams Power Control Centre.
The new SCADA system provides Yarra Trams with greater integration to other business systems providing enhanced transparency between the fleet operations and electrical operations teams.
This new system monitors and controls the traction power of the world’s largest metropolitan tram network, with 250km of double track across Melbourne. It comprises 11 operator workstations spread across three sites, a complete disaster recovery centre and redundant server and LAN architectures to ensure availability.
The system provides functionality and interfaces to business systems to enable Yarra Trams to better control, monitor and manage its network. In addition to the work performed by the project team, significant enhancements were made to the MOSAIC product to support the new requirements.
A Yarra Trams spokesman said: “Improved access to a wider range of data enables a proactive and faster response to potential problems in our power network, resulting in greater business efficiency. It brings us close to real-time management, as well as providing greater control over our carbon emissions.”
Logica undertook comprehensive planning of the testing and commissioning phases. This enabled us to install, test and transition the system into service without Yarra Trams losing visibility of its network, ensuring there was no impact to tram operations.
Logica was selected to implement and maintain the system for 10 years following a tough bid process. For such a technically challenging project, Yarra Trams required a reliable partner to upgrade the control centre with minimum disruption, with the expertise to integrate new technology with existing business systems.
Melburnians are turning to public transport in an effort to be greener and avoid traffic congestion, so it is vital for Yarra Trams to ensure a consistent and efficient service for passengers.
This project marks the beginning of an 11 year relationship between Logica and Yarra Trams which will see Logica support the system to ensure it meets all of Yarra Trams’ future business needs.
