Logica Australia leads the way for a sustainable future

29 November 2010

Logica, a leading IT and business services provider, has been commended for its approach to climate change disclosure and carbon management performance by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). Logica Australia has implemented a stringent monitoring and reporting process across its business, which its CEO believes will help the company better perform in a future where carbon emissions will impact the bottom line.

“Today, monitoring and communicating carbon emissions are no longer just about creating a ‘greener’ corporation, it’s about preparing for the future,” said Linda Carseldine, CFO Asia Pacific, Logica. “It is not too long before we see carbon reporting and disclosure become a regulatory requirement with real money at stake.”

For a third consecutive year Logica is the only business and technology service company to feature in the CDP’s “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index”, which represents 534 institutional investors with $64 trillion in assets under management. Logica has improved its performance on the Index by 10 points and is now in the top five of all IT companies globally.

“Improving your company’s green credentials is not only critical for an effective business development strategy, but will soon directly impact profitability when the government inevitably puts a price on carbon,” said Carseldine.

Logica Australia completed a comprehensive audit across its business to establish the extent of its carbon footprint, including a detailed employee survey to represent carbon created by travel to and from work. It established the following three areas were the main sources of carbon within the local business and developed a strategy to improve efficiency in these areas:

  1. Electricity used in offices and third party data centres
  2. Employee travel between home and work
  3. International and domestic air travel

“We have now taken a holistic approach to lowering our carbon emissions across our national organisation, which includes investing in energy efficient technologies, running behavioural change programs and implementing new corporate policies around the way we do business. Some of these green projects will take a number of years to roll out, so it is important that we take these steps now in preparation of the future,” says Carseldine.

Employee engagement is a vital part of Logica Australia’s carbon reduction strategy, which reminds employees that easy changes in behaviour can save money and the environment. On the 15-19 November, Logica held its third Environmental Awareness Week where each day employees were encouraged to recycle, choose eco travel options, cut energy consumption, limit printing or switch off electrical appliances.

Tactics employed to reducing electricity consumption

To lower energy consumption, Logica has implemented duplex printing; virtualisation of services and desktops; 5 star energy rated white goods in its kitchens; implemented hot desking and working from client site initiatives; installed multifunctional printers; activated sleep mode for computers; and installed light sensors and timers in its offices. Logica Australia has also decreased its total number of ‘pool’ vehicles and ensures at least 20% of purchased energy is from non fossil fuel sources. All new buildings are selected on merit of their green credentials and staff are actively encouraged to be more energy aware.

Reducing travel related carbon emissions

Logica Australia has implemented a company policy to ensure all new offices and work sites procured are within a close proximity to reliable public transport to encourage staff to leave their cars at home. Bike storage facilities are installed across all office sites and community ‘ride to work’ initiatives are actively promoted to staff. Where feasible, Logica avoids providing staff parking to encourage use of public transport.

International and domestic air travel

Logica Australia has employed strict policies and authorities control for air travel. It has increased the number of video conferencing suites available to employees to encourage virtual collaboration.

In 2009 Logica was able to reduce its carbon emissions by 6.1%, most of which was attributed to its restricted air travel policy. From 2011 onwards, Logica will increase its carbon disclosure reporting from once a year to once a quarter.
