Virtualisation allows for rapid growth
What Roaring 40s needed
When Roaring 40s was first conceived, parent company Hydro Tasmania asked its IT service provider, Logica, to lend a helping hand. Under Hydro Tasmania’s guidance Logica provided services and personnel to assist the company develop its capabilities and a presence in the Australian market.
The Challenge
One of the first projects to be managed by Logica was an upgrade of the IT infrastructure at Roaring 40s head office in Hobart. The old equipment was out of warranty and out of date, and unable to keep up with the rapid growth Roaring 40s was experiencing.
The Result
To solve the problem Logica designed and implemented a VMware virtual server environment which optimises the allocation of computer loads across servers, reducing the number of dedicated machines required. “This gave us the ability to scale up or down and implement new servers cost effectively as required”, Steane notes. “We now run 28 servers on three physical boxes.”
Key Benefits
- Reduce the company's investment in servers
- Reduce physical space required to house the servers
- drop in power consumption and demand on air conditioning systems
- No more back up
