Fast Forward a green future

What Hydro Needed
The ethic of environmental responsibility runs deep at Hydro Tasmania. The company is targeting carbon neutrality by late 2010. Logica helped find ways to reduce Hydro Tasmania’s own power consumption.

The Challenge
Logica project managed the design, procurement and commissioning of a new virtual computer environment that has dramatically reduced power usage, as well as the physical space required. This virtual environment has paid for itself within 12 months, despite requiring an initial $1million investment.

The Result
Besides the initial reductions in space, cost and energy, Hydro Tasmania has discovered a number of additional benefits resulting from its virtual environment. It has helped to introduce new IT disciplines, better capacity planning and more efficient utilisation of assets. The introduction of new systems can be achieved within hours using existing equipment, rather than having to wait the four or six weeks it used to take before a new server could be delivered
